Untitled as of yet

These are images I've been working on. I'm struggling with whether or not I should have a person or human element in the photographs or right after the object may have gotten there. the one with me laying in the kitchen is one I'm most unsure about, it also needs a ton of work still but I wanted to put it up to show anyways. I also was not sure about which earings in the litter box looked better. I personally like the close up, but I suppose it could be argued that its too staged looking and that the one pulled out tells more of the story. Comments are very very welcome.

i like what you've been coming up with, its completely different from your work last semester. it introduces fashion in a more abstract way, at least in my opinion. you're showing fashion elements but juxtaposing them against common characteristics within our richmond apartments. the first one you showed has to be my favorite by far, at first look i didn't even know this was your work, i was blown away. i really liked the simplicity of the photograph, the lighting really makes this photograph for me. the way the light hits the wall and gradiates but also hitting the edge of the armchair. although i like the bottom one you had issues with, i do feel its a disconnected from the rest of the works, as they have no human interaction within the photos, but you do add it into this one. the soft focus/shallow depth of field helps with that though, you tend to concentrate more on the shoes and the patterns on the floor rather than the figure tucked away in the dark. overall, i like what you've been doing, keep it up, they're really starting to turn out interesting. one more thing, how did you get that effect in your second image with the beads? is that set on a tripod then you bounced beads in a corner? whatever you did i like how its a static frame with motion around it.

I really appreciate the lighting and 'personality' of these images. They are well done. It is like you are taking a product or fashion image, but giving it a feeling of home.
Personally, I kind of like the level of human interaction (or non-interaction in this case) in your images. I feel adding too much 'human' may take away from the images.

are these imaegs about the objects/settings, or more about the people?

im liking how this work is evolving. i like the concept of taking everyday objects and placing them out of context. im highly intrigued by your first image, i think its beautiful (!!!) and definitely not what i expected. i REALLY enjoy the simplicity in composition and how it appears so clean, soft, and neutral. i could see the series being really strong if you apply this aesthetic to all your work. however, it is very different from the other images posted.
the other images have a bit more grunge to them which is an extremely interesting approach in itself. taking these often beautiful objects and placing them out of the "beautiful" context, like your earrings in the litter box.
i think the last image is my second favorite out of what is posted but im not sure it goes with the other ones because you have the human element in it. i think re-shooting the last image the same way but taking yourself out of the background may help it flow more with your other images. either that or adding the human element in all of them, it just depends on the direction you want to take your project. i personally like the images without the human element, it adds more mystery and narrative and forces you to engage and question more. i can see your first and last image standing alone but they dont flow very well for me as a series. i think making all of your images either soft like the first one or adding a bit of grunge like the pearls falling on the bathroom floor will really help this develop into a series. if executed properly i think the series could be interesting either way, you just have to pick one and go with it.
personally im not too keen on the earring in the litter box, i dont really see it as an earring, honestly i thought it was cat poop at first glance so just be careful how you compose it.

Along with what the others said, I really respond to the first one. Something about the composition gives it that fashion element and the mysterious and soft lighting adds a nice suspenseful feel. Out of those that you posted I believe it is the most successful. I don't particularly care for the little box images. I don't think they will really fit along with your other images. And like Rachael said, the earrings do just kind of look like poop. I didn't notice until I actually read what she wrote. I do like the last one though as well. I don't think it's a completely bad thing to add in more of a human character. I'm assuming it's you in the photograph, and I like how you're kind of faded into the black and not the main subject. I look and the bottom of the image and slowly look back and notice you there. I still concentrate on the shoe more than anything though which is good because I think that's what you're going for. It gives the image a nice narrative. The image with the checkered floor is interesting. I like the motion of the pearls. Something about the composition of it makes me think that it's a miniature environment; i'm not really sure what though. The motion gives just enough human element without anyone actually being in the shot. But like I said, I don't think it's horrible to have an actual human character in some of the shots.

Im not sure how I feel about the sunglasses image, and the litter box image. I like the simplicity of the image with the glasses, however I don't like the glasses you used. I feel like with your images you really have to pay close attention to the accessories your using. The glasses don't seem to fit the part, as well as the earrings in the litter box. I think its really interesting how you included motion into the pearl image, it adds a whole new element you could explore the series.
